Construido originalmente en 1967 y retirado a archivo en 1989, la restauración por parte del LCM comenzó en 2013. El responsable e ingeniero principal Bruce Sherry, continúa el trabajo de restauración, junto con otras personas, manejando el gran despliegue de hardware y software único en su tipo, que se requiere para la correcta operación del CDC 6500 a fin de que una nueva generación pueda experimentar su uso.

Utilizar el CDC 6500 es para muchos una experiencia diferente a cualquier otra. La guía en inglés "A [[CDC6500_Survival_Guide|survival guide]]" cubre el funcionamiento básico del Sistema Operativo, editores y lenguajes de programación disponibles en el CDC 6500 del LCM.
